Art Museums in Tulsa

Modern and traditional, these are our favorite Tulsa art museums.

Philbrook Museum of Art

Art museums in Tulsa seem to have a very distinct design; that’s part of their appeal. At the Philbrook Museum of Art, there’s appeal to spare! That’s because the museum sits on an exquisite Renaissance-style Italian villa! Plus, the museum features acres and acres of gorgeous gardens. Truly a delight for the senses! The Philbrook Museum specializes in a wide variety of genres, including modern, contemporary, and antiquities. It also has one of the largest modern and Native American art collections.

Gilcrease Art Museum

Formed by a partnership between Tulsa and the University of Tulsa, the Gilcrease Art Museum in Tulsa opened its doors in 1949. What’s interesting about the museum is it specializes in art from the American West. That includes everything from colonial artifacts to the present day. Also, the museum has an extensive collection of Native American art. Another exciting aspect of the Gilcrease Museum is its two yearly exhibitions, which showcase contemporary western art and smaller works. The latter also includes an art sale that brings collectors from around the world. The museum offers 23 exquisite acres of themed gardens that are perfect for an afternoon stroll.

Storage Tip: One aspect of the arts that most don’t realize is how much space is needed to store them. Many museums and galleries rent local Tulsa storage units to store their artworks. Also, many local artists use storage units in Tulsa to store their supplies. It’s a perfect way to get the extra space they need and help their artistry shine. (For more info, click here).

Coffee Shops in Tulsa

End your day of gazing at art museums with one of our favorite coffee shops in Tulsa.

Hodges Bend

For some, coffee isn’t just a drink but an experience. Tulsa has quite a few locally owned cafes and roasteries. They’re warm, a little quirky, and inviting. These coffee shops are a great place to relax after visiting a Tulsa museum. One of the best is Hodges Bend. It’s tucked away in the East Village and serves coffee with a definite kick (we recommend the Wake-Up Call heartily). Besides the coffee, the atmosphere at Hodges Bend is exceptionally appealing. It’s kind of like a speakeasy from the 1920s, jazzy and sophisticated.

Where can you go and get a cuppa’ joe while admiring beautiful art installations in Tulsa’s downtown? Foolish Things Coffee Company, of course! With it’s floor-to-ceiling windows, there’s no lack of natural light in this coffee shop. There’s also no lack of understanding of the importance of coffee (How many coffee shops do you know that have a House Rules and Manifesto? There’s no doubt that, among all the coffee shops in Tulsa, Foolish Things has the finest scenery. It also has plenty of room for you to spread out and work. With an atmosphere like this, whatever you do will undoubtedly be inspired. It may not be a Tulsa art museum, but Foolish Things Coffee Company certainly has a lot of class.
