2 out of 3 people rank moving as the most stressful event of their lives. Thankfully for your stress level, our latest infographic is filled with moving tips and checklists. Whether you’ve just signed a lease or closed on your first home, get your move on with our ultimate moving guide.
Before you move, update others of your impending address change. Speak with your bank, employer, insurance companies and any subscriptions delivered to your home. You should also arrange mail forwarding with your local post office.
Next, determine how to transport everything. You likely have some large items in your home—like a couch, mattress and TV. Rent a moving truck or hire professional movers to accommodate those heavier belongings.
To determine whether movers or a rental truck is better for your situation, consider:
- Your ability to pack and carry your possessions, as well as how many hands you’ll have help
- The distance you’ll travel
- Your comfort level driving a large moving truck
Finally, purchase and gather moving supply staples, like:
- Permanent markers
- Packing material, such as plastic wrap and paper
- Trash bags
The beginning of the packing process is a perfect time to take inventory of everything. Ask yourself the following 4 questions:
- Have I used this in the last year? (If the answer is yes, keep it.)
- Is it broken or missing parts? (If the answer is yes, throw it out.)
- Would someone else get value from it? (If the answer is no, throw it out.)
- Is it new or worth money? (If the answer is yes, donate it.)
As you pack, consider the way your new home is set up. Keep items that belong in the same room in the same boxes and label them accordingly. Additionally, keep those boxes grouped together in your moving truck.
Set aside one box or bag for your first night. Include everything you’ll need for the first 24 hours in your new abode. It should include pajamas and a change of clothes for every family member, toiletries, blankets, and pillows.
Moving days rarely go as planned, so start early! This way, you’ll still have extra daylight if tasks take longer than expected.
Moving is a full-body workout, so make sure everyone stays hydrated and safe. Have bottled water available for all friends, family, and hired help.
With your old home packed up, you’re ready to hit the road and head to your new place. But, before you leave for the last time, make sure you:
- Do a final walkthrough
- Deep clean every room
- Turn in your keys
- Lock all doors and windows
- Turn off the thermostat
If you hired movers, make sure you tip them before they leave. Your 12-person couch isn’t easy to maneuver around staircases and stacked boxes!
If your move requires setting some things aside in storage, choose a convenient SecurCare Self Storage location near you.
