How to Store Fishing Rods: The DIY Solution

With nearly 36 million anglers in the U.S., fishing is a hobby that’s really catching on (pun intended). But as many fish fans know, it takes a range of rods, buckets of bait and heaps of hooks to make this peaceful pastime worthwhile. With all of this equipment to keep track of, you may be short on ideas for storing fishing rods. Don’t worry–we have you covered with this painless DIY project.

The Best Way to Store Fishing Rods

If they’re not stored neatly, fishing rods can get as tangled as your Christmas lights. There are plenty of store-bought storage options available, but why not construct your own solution for less than $50?

You’ll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • J-hooks
  • 2×3 studs
  • Wood screws
  • Foam weather stripping tape or loop-side Velcro

Instructions:

  1. Space your j-hooks 8 inches apart. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark the spots where you’ll screw them in.
  2. Screw the first hook into the left side of the stud with the hook pointed to the right.
  3. Place the second hook 8 inches to the right with the hook pointed to the left.
  4. Install the third hook adjacent to the second hook pointed to the right.
  5. The fourth hook should be mounted 8 more inches to the right, pointing left.
  6. Continue this pattern until you reach the end of the board, where the final hook will point to the left.
  7. Repeat steps 1-6 on the next stud; you’ll need 2 for each rack.
  8. Add cushioning to your rods. Fix the foam tape or loop-side Velcro to the inside of each hook. You only need to do this for the top set of hooks because the bottom set will secure the handles.

Remember to clean your fishing rods and equipment before you store it! Use a Q-tip dipped in dish soap to remove any gunk, grass or minerals from the guides. To clean the handle, wipe it down with a clean cloth and some rubbing alcohol.
